Color Web Printers to end newspaper printing operations – digital print production operations not affected by closure.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa, July 9, 2021 – Folience, a Cedar Rapids-based ESOP-owned
holding company, announced today it will cease newspaper printing operations at Color
Web Printers August 31.

The closure will impact 34 full-time and 8 part-time employees at the print facility,
located at 4700 Bowling St. SW in Cedar Rapids. The company has operated from the
Bowling Street facility since 1999, when it relocated from The Gazette’s downtown

The closure comes because of increased printing consolidation industry-wide and the
end of several long-term printing contracts.

Printing of The Gazette, PennySaver, Southeast Iowa Union, Washington Evening
Journal, Mt. Pleasant News, Fairfield Ledger and The Shopper will be transitioned to
Gannett Publishing Services in Des Moines. The Gazette will print in Des Moines for the
first time with the Aug. 26th edition.

“This was a very difficult decision, because it affects our fellow employee-owners, many
of whom are long-time employees,” said Folience CEO Daniel Goldstein. “But the
changing economics and consolidation of the print industry necessitates this.”

The digital print production operation and local distribution teams are not impacted by
the closure and will continue operating at the Bowling Street facility until a future
location is identified.

Subscribers and advertisers will not experience an interruption of service when printing
transitions to Des Moines.

“When printing moves to Des Moines, nightly trucking, combined with our local
distribution team will maintain current production standards for our print readers,” said
Executive Editor Zack Kucharski. “We remain just as committed to serving the local
community as we ever have and are planning some changes that should increase
content in some areas of the paper. We’ll detail some of those changes closer to the
transition date.”

Folience is the parent company of The Gazette and Color Web Printers in Cedar
Rapids, The Southeast Iowa Union in Washington, Life Line Emergency Vehicles in
Sumner, IA and Cimarron Trailers in Chickasha, OK.
